Self Guided Walking
Where can I walk on my own?
There are two trails that will take you up to the Ptarmigan building - the Coire Cas Mountain trail and the Windy Ridge path. Both start at the Base Station. Allow 1-2 hours to reach the walkers’ entrance at the Ptarmigan. The summit then takes a further 20-30 minutes to reach. Allow up to 4 hours in total.
To enter the Ptarmigan building ring the doorbell at the walkers’ entrance. Please sign the visitors’ book both on arrival and on departure.
Are there shorter walks that I can do?
The Mountain Woods trail takes 1 hour, the Lower Coire Cas Loop trail 40 minutes, the Lower Burnside trail only 10 minutes and the Aonach Trail which is suitable for all abilities 15-30 minutes. The Allt Mor Trail to Glenmore which starts from the lower car park takes 1 hour each way (or catch the bus back). Finally there is the Mountain Garden to wander around at your leisure.
Am I fit enough to walk to the summit?
If you are comfortable walking uphill for 2 hours and do not suffer from any serious medical conditions, then you should be able to walk to the top.
Are there walks suitable for children?
The shorter walks are all suitable for children, and the summit walk for those aged 8 and over. Younger children may also be able to walk to the top. The footpath conditions are not suitable for strollers, buggies or wheelchairs.
Can we take our dog?
Dogs are welcome on the walks but please keep them on a leash due to ground nesting birds and deer.
What should I wear?
The weather can change quickly on the mountain so, on the longer walks, ensure you have waterproofs, extra clothing and a hat. Walking boots or trail boots should be worn. Take something to eat and plenty to drink.
Do you have trail maps?
On sale at the ticket office, cost £1.00
Do I have to walk alone?
No, you can join one of our Ranger guided walks, either a Guided Summit Walk, or the Walk @ The Top.
