Walk Up, Train Down
What is Walk Up, Train Down?
Visitors can experience the peace and fresh air of the mountain landscape and combine this with a ride on the funicular by going on a Walk Up, Train Down. Use the self-guided footpath network to walk up through the ski area on a range of clearly marked trails up to the Ptarmigan building which you can enter via the walkers’ entrance. Pause there for refreshments or go to the Shop at the Top and buy a ticket for your return funicular journey downhill or continue to the Summit and back before entering the Ptarmigan for the funicular back down.
Allow at least 90 minutes for the walk to the Ptarmigan and another 30 each way if you plan to go to the Summit. This is a great morning or afternoon’s activity.
Am I fit enough to do this walk?

If you are relatively fit and do not suffer from any serious medical conditions you should be able to undertake this walk.
Can children do the walk?

The walk to the Ptarmigan Station is suitable for children aged 8 and over, but the footpath conditions are not suitable for strollers, buggies or wheelchairs.

Can dogs participate in the walk?

Dogs are welcome on all walks but please keep them on a leash. Tickets for the train cost £1 for your dog and they will have to travel in a separate compartment from other visitors on the train.

What should I wear?

The weather can change quickly on the mountain so take waterproofs, extra clothing and a hat. Walking boots or trail shoes are required and a hat should also be carried. Also take something to eat and plenty of water.

How much does the train cost?

- Adult £7.00
- Senior/Student £6.15
- Junior £4.50
- Family (2 adults, 2 juniors) £21.40
- Family (1 adult, 2 juniors) £14.90
- Dog £1.00

Where do I get my ticket from?

You can purchase your ticket for the down train at the Shop at the Top.  Before setting off from the Base Station, please check when the last train down will run.
