Ski Area representatives and industry suppliers from seven nations will be gathering in Aviemore early next week to share knowledge and experience of running ski areas in the Northern latitudes. The two day conference is being hosted by the Association of Scottish Ski Areas – ASSA, (CairnGorm, Glencoe, Glenshee, Lecht and Nevis Range) and delegates will be hosted by CairnGorm Mountain on Monday 7th and Nevis Range on Tuesday 8th September finishing with a visit to the braehead Snowdome on Wednesday 9th.

Following the first North Atlantic Ski Areas Conference hosted by Iceland in 2008, the 2009 conference will host ski area delegates from Scotland, Sweden and  Iceland and industry supplier representatives from Doppelmayer (lift systems), Kassbohrer (grooming), Poma (lift systems), Surfag (Snow making), Sunkid (play zone products).

Colin Mathew, Operations Manager at CairnGorm Mountain believes the Northern Conference is a valuable opportunity for learning and sharing:

“Ski areas in Northern latitudes have a particular set of shared problems including; a market that is predominantly domestic, the need for diversification, climatic impacts on equipment particularly wind and ice and the effective management of a declining amount of natural snow. The conference includes formal presentations but there will be plenty of opportunity to participate in informal discussion sessions where these common problems can be shared and we can hear how other operators are tackling these issues, share our own experiences and hopefully pick up a few new ideas.”

The opening day on Monday 7th September isbeing hosted by CairnGorm Mountain and at 11am James Macinstosh (Lecht) and Chairman of  ASSA will welcome delegates to the 2nd NASSA Conference and invite Guomundur Karl Jonsson (Iceland),  President of NASSA to give the opening address.  This will be followed by ski industry overview presentations given by all the nations attending. The agenda for the two day conference cover all the shared themes including snow management, summer activities and diversification and uplift management.
