With climate change affecting the snowfall each year more pressure is placed on certain areas of the high plateau for such activities as snow holing. With increased numbers in the same place, one simple thing becomes apparent, what do you do when you need the loo?
Prevoiusly, in the spring thaw months Human waste would be found melting out of the snowbeds. This is not only unsightly and smelly but causes an increased risk of illness from contaminated snow. Last but by no means least, there is a significant impact on the local biodiversity and contamination of the nearby water courses.
Supported by TISO - The Outdoor Specialist, Cairngorms National Park Authority, Glenmore Lodge and Leader Plus, the Poo Project was setup in 2007 by former CairnGorm Mountain Ranger Heather Morning.
The aim of this FREE SERVICE is to reduce the amount of human waste out on the high plateau areas by carrying waste back in special pots and carry bags, contents are then treated at the sewage treatment plant at Cairngorm - Coire Cas car park.
The Poo bags have been specially sourced for this project and are made from corn starch. These break up once in the treatment facility. The pots are reusable water tight & air tight containers which come with a carry pouch.
CML's treatment plant will only cope with biodegrable bags supplied from the Ranger Base. Any other type of bag will simply clogg the sewage system so please use the right bags!
The Pots & bags are available from the Ranger Base at the Coire Cas Car Park
(grid ref NH990060). The treatment facility is situated below the lower Cas Car Park, just follow the signs to guide you there.
This service is FREE OF CHARGE so please return the pots and carrying pouches.
